Niagara of Joy

NIAGARA

of joy

awaits our opening up

to God who floods

the thirsting hearts

with love.

To thirst, to seek, to bring

the emptied vessel of the emptied heart

to One who longs for us,

to make a home in us:

Only this emptied, readied heart

can hold

the Infinite.

Repent with opened door,-          (Revelations 3:20)

believe the love that

is being poured on us,

-the Christ.

Tattered / ‘Giobalach’

                                                TATTERED -   (‘GIOBALACH’*)

A tattered

scattered spirit,

splattered

every which way

but in.

What din

I’m in.

The threads

now raw

I’ll gather up

and knit again

this garment

for my Lord.

Come back my rambled soul,

be still, be whole

before you work again.

What use a broken dish

to feed

a multitude.

It’s time to mend,

to tend.

Seamus Devitt, C.Ss.R.

* ”Giobalach”  is a descriptive Gaelic word, describing the tattered appearance of somebody.

God-less?

GOD- LESS ?

The God-  less

are  not.

They would be

if they were not

so loved,

so died-for,

before all,

after all.

Ignoring Love does not

diminish Love,

-in us perhaps, it might,

but never does in

God.

We are not God-Less

though we try to be.

Praise Him!

Fr. Sean Lawlor, C.Ss.R., R.I.P

Fr. Sean Lawlor, Redemptorist, died (suddenly) in Limerick, on Feb. 7th, 2012.The following was written by Fr. Dermie O’Connor, who lived and worked with Fr. Sean in Esker for several years, as well as spending many years in Brazil also with Fr. Sean.Sean Lawlor spent over twenty years in Brazil. Most of the time was worked closely with Bishop Jaime Collins, C.Ss.R, in the Diocese of Miracema do Norte. His energies were devoted, amongst other things,  to setting up a Pastoral Centre in that remote  diocese for the ongoing formation of the priests and religious of the diocese, and –a vital part of the Pastoral Centre- for the formation of lay people to take on leadership roles in the diocese.

When Fr. Sean finished his time in Brazil, he spent two years studying in Berkeley in California, where he got a Masters degree in Spirituality. He returned to Ireland in the eighties and worked for several years as Vocation Director for the Irish Redemptorists.  After a term as Superior in Liguori House in Dublin, he was appointed as Director of the Retreat House here in Esker, where he remained for six years. He was a dynamic leader and the Retreat House flourished under him. He developed both the Youth Ministry and the Adult Ministry.

Brazilians: His last years were spent as Chaplain to various Brazilian communities along the Western part of Ireland, from Co. Cork, to Limerick to Clare, to Galway and to Mayo. Sean gave himself generously to this task, bisiting these communities regularly, ministering to their spiritual needs and also involving himself in getting their legal status regularised.

His character: Sean was a warm, gregarious person. He had a great capacity to enjoy life with a wonderful sense of humour. Those of us who lived with him have deep and lasting memories of him. The Brazilians were shocked and dismayed at his sudden death at the age of 74. They will miss him hugely. But so will all of us who knew him and loved him.

May he rest in peace.

- – - – The following was written shortly after Fr. Sean’s death on Feb. 7th, 2012.

Please pray for the happy repose of the soul of Fr. Seán Lawlor, C.Ss.R. who died suddenly in Limerick on February 7, 2012.   Fr. Seán was a member of the Redemptorist Community, Mount Saint Alphonsus, Limerick and chaplain to Brazilian communities along the western seaboard.Fr. Sean worked in Esker from 1999 to 2005, in charge of the Retreat House. His face was familiar to so many people who came here to Esker during those years. Always full of welcome and a welcoming smile, Fr. Sean worked wholeheartedly in his ministry here in Esker. Since moving from here in 2005 to Mount St. Alphonsus’ community in Limerick, he has worked tirelessly in ministering to and caring for the many Brazilians who moved to this country in those years. He ministered to Brazilian communities from Fermoy to Gort, Athenry, Tuam.

Fr. Seán died just after midday on Tuesday, 7th February 2012, during lunch in his community in Limerick. May God rest his very dear soul. He was greatly loved among us all, and will be greatly missed by many people.

R. I. P.

Fr. Seán was born on 31st December 1937 and following his novitiate he professed his vows as a Redemptorist on 24th September 1957.  On 19th January 1964 he was ordained a priest and six months later he sailed to Brazil to begin his missionary ministry and for many years he was based in central Brazil in the State of Tocintins and Parnaiba in the north eastern State of Piauí.

On returning to Ireland in 1985 he was for some time a member of our community in Cluain Mhuire, Wellpark, Galway until its closure in 1990.  During this time he was our vocations’ director and he continued in this role when he was transferred to Dublin.  For the term 1996-1999 he was a member of our Provincial Council.

In 1999 he was appointed Director of Esker Retreat House, Athenry, Co. Galway and continued in this ministry until 1985 when he took up his work with Brazilian communities, especially in Gort, Tuam, Loughrea and Athenry in Co. Galway, also in Ennis, Limerick and other places as required.

Seán was a big man full of the joys of life and a great entertainer and we pray that the Lord is now entertaining his good and faithful servant.

The Throwaways

THE THROWAWAYS
we are,
by some
but not
by Him.
Labelled as ‘Not Wanted Here’
we ‘Castaways’
are not!
Some throw their pearls to the swine,
Not Him.
He gathers  Throwaways
as Pearls for His Heart
which is their
Tabernacle
now,
their tent and hiding place.
‘My delight’ He says,
‘is to be with people’,-
children of parents who themselves
might sometimes rubbish their own.
Not He:
He catches every Throwaway:

That’s Him!

Emptiful

To have the hungering
ear
expectant
of the Word that
certainly will come,-
For why?- Why not?-
For Abba is my Father,
I his child
being trained and
disciplined/
discipled:
of course He will, in His
expected time,
speak to my life
in wondrous
whispered
ways
or surgings of surprise,-
what ways I care not
if I can but be
attending
on His time,
that moment mine
that He has stored
for me.
And He for us, for each
a torrent of His grace
prepared
if vessels of our hearts, our ears
are emptiful for Him.
‘In the beginning was the Word…’                   (John 1:1)
and the Word -  is here.

Ash Wednesday… the start of our journey

(The image of Jesus Christ as Clown is very ancient, and is found in art, eg. by George Rouault, a French artist of the 1930’s. Jesus is ridiculed, but remains silent, is laughed at but remains serene. And still is.)

STILL CLOWNING AROUND!
What are the teachings of this
Clown of mine,
that I should weave into
the warp and woof of life?
What is His foolishness that
now is wise?

-’Find happiness in clarity of heart?
-Find fullness in the empty of this spirit?
-Find wealth unknown in gentleness?
-Have hunger in my heart for uprightness?
-Make way for weakness in the ones
with me?
-Create a bridge of peace in brokenness?

Take stick and sticks
until they form a cross,-
be freely nailed on ridicule,

then laugh
until the light arises in the dawn
and then they well may ask:
‘Who are these clowns?’ -
or some day they
may come
and gaze into the mirror
of this Cross,
and see their call to be
the Guilty-Now-Forgiven  Welcomed Ones!

Lent, a Stirring Time?

THE WRESTLER

Soul, Body,
Mind and Heart,
wrestling with the mist
of questions
that surround the
holy all of us.-
Bewildered, helpless, poor of answer
yet living out the joys of
peeking daffodils-
heads thrust above cold clay,
reaching towards the February sun
and filling slowly out;
some weeks remain before we see
the radiance of even one,-
just one,- to fill the heart’s
deep hungering vessel of
delight.

And so the Now; -it is a February time,
still winter yes, still cold with
so much dark,
but earth is stirring in her bowels,
humanity’s God awake
and things are stirring in His people
that their God only knows.

Will we, together, walk with him
within the Garden of Today,-
and see with poet’s eyes, with hope
that knows the truth
that He Who Is  is found in every bush,
in every flower in a human heart,-
snowdrops, perhaps, of hope that lift the
human spirit towards the Warming Son?
