Promoting the Redemptorist Missionary Vocation, worldwide

A daily prayer:

A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS TO THE REDEMPTORIST FAMILY

Provident God, You spoke your dream of plentiful redemption in Jesus Christ. Your Spirit ignited the heart of St. Alphonsus, inspiring him to found a family in the Church, dedicated to proclaiming the good news of plentiful redemption to the most abandoned.

Raise up among us strong women and men of faith, afire with love for you and zeal for the mission of proclaiming your word among those who do not know you, or who need to hear your Word proclaimed anew.

Guide men to respond with generosity as vowed Redemptorist priests and brothers, and women and men to serve in joy and hope as partners in the Redemptorist mission.

We ask this in the name of Jesus, Your Word, who is our Life. Amen.

(Please think of copying this prayer, above, and saying it in your family.)

Q.  Who are Redemptorists?

Alphonsus Liguori, a young priest aged 36 years, together with some companions, founded the Congregation of priests and brothers, known today as Redemptorists, on November 9th, 1732.

On this Sunday, November 8th, Redemptorists worldwide pray for a renewal and an increase in the Redemptorist Missionary Vocation. In our Esker Redemptorist community, we will pray for the same, and pray for a new generation to take up the call of Christ, to come to him, and to go out to all the world.

Simon, do you love me?’ ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you!’… ‘Feed my lambs, feed my sheep’. (John 21). Our founder, St. Alphonsus, told us Redemptorists, that if we love Jesus, we will feed his people with the Gospel.

In Mark 3:14, when Jesus had chosen the twelve, each by name, St. Mark tells us that ‘he called them to be with him, and to go out.’  As our Redemptorist Constitutions remind us: ‘Redemptorists (from the Latin Redemptor/ Redeemer) are ‘called to continue the presence of Christ and his mission …in the world…They choose the person of Christ as the centre of their life and strive day by day to enter ever more intimately into personal union with him.’

The Redemptorist Missionary: ‘Strong in faith, rejoicing in hope, burning with charity, on fire with zeal, in humility of heart and persevering in prayer, Redemptorists as apostolic men and genuine disciples of Saint Alphonsus follow Christ the Redeemer with hearts full of joy; denying themselves and always ready to undertake what is demanding, they share in the mystery of Christ and proclaim it in Gospel simplicity of life and language’.

that they may bring to people plentiful redemption.‘ (Constitution 20)

Preference for situations where there is pastoral need, that is, for evangelisation in the strict sense together with the choice in favour of the poor, is the very reason why the Congregation exists in the Church, and is the badge of its fidelity to the vocation it has received.’ (Constitution 5)

The chief object of their preaching is to lead people to a radical choice regarding their life, – a decision for Christ- and draw them firmly and gently to a firm and total conversion’. (Constitution 11).
