It is with great sadness in our community that we announce the death, today January 8th, 2021, in Galway Hospice, of Fr. Michael Heagney of our Esker Redemptorist Community. Our sympathies go out to all his family, his friends, and his Redemptorist confreres. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Mass for Fr. Michael Sunday January 10th, at 11am in Esker - family only, due to Covid restrictions. Mass will be on-line at www.eskerreds.ie / Webcam. Burial immediately afterwards in Esker Community Cemetery.
Fr. Michael was born 19 August 1936 in Gortaniomaire/ Gortanummera, Portumna, in South County Galway. From 1950 to 1955, he attended secondary school at the Redemptorist College in Limerick. He entered the Redemptorist Novitiate, and one year later, on September 24th of 1956, he took his first vows. He was ordained to the Priesthood on January 20th, 1963. For twenty five years, from 1964 to 1989, he worked in the Ilongo-speaking region of the Philippines, mostly in Iloilo but also in Bacolod. From 1990 to ’93, he worked in the Novitiate in Dundalk with Fr. Pat Reynolds. From 1993 to 1997, he worked in Galway, living in Newcastle with some other Redemptorists. He then ministered for four years in Mount St. Alphonsus in Limerick, before moving to Esker in 2001. He has been in Esker now for twenty years.
Michael was one gentle soul, a gracious man, a compassionate priest, and much loved in our community. May he rest in the peace and joy of the Lord.
